Bird flu reveals further discrimination of Kurds in Turkey

Turkish authorities have done little or nothing to inform the Kurdish population about the bird flu disease, currently spreading across the country. When bird flew was detected in the non-Kurdish western Turkey last year, however, the authorities instantly presented information on how life stocks were to be killed. Follow-up guidance on possibly infected people was also given.

Human rights defender sentenced for 'incitement to enmity and hatred'

A human rights defender who co-published a report concerning the forced displacement of Kurdish people in Turkey have been sentenced by Turkish courts for allegedly "incite[ing] people to enmity and hatred because of class, racial, religious, confessional or regional differences." Sefika Gurbuz, chairwoman of the Immigrants' Association for Social Co-operation and Culture (Göç-Der), is the latest to be sentenced under Article 312(2) of the Turkish Penal Code, a law that has frequently been criticised by EU and human rights observers. Dr. Mehmet Barut, a Göç-Der board member and academic at the University of Mersin who jointly published the report, was acquitted. The appeal court affirmed her sentence on 4 November.

Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) interviewed on the arrest of Kamal Said Qadir

Previously at Beyan.net we reported on the arrest of a Kurdish citizen based in Austria, in Kurdistan. Beyan.net received an official statement from the Kurdistan Regional Government regarding the case. Taha Barwary, the KRG Nordic Representative confirmed that Kamal Said Qadir was arrested by Kurdish authorities 26 October of this year.
