The Norwegian Council for the Rights of Kurdish People (RKR) was founded in 1994. RKR is a politically independent, human rights organization which seeks to inform the public about the situation for the Kurdish people. The Kurds are the largest ethic group in the world without their own state. 30 million Kurds live as a suppressed minority in Turkey, Iran, Iraq and Syria.
RKR seeks to increase the awareness of the human right violations committed towards the Kurdish people. Information and advocacy is directed towards Norwegian authorities, humanitarian -and human right organizations, academia and the media.
The Norwegian Council supports the initiatives towards constructive dialogue between conflicting Kurdish parties. Through such a dialogue the organization hopes to stimulate a pluralist Kurdish community in Norway and abroad. The council stress its independence towards political organizations and it cooperates in Norway and other countries with related NGOs.
The WOMEN'S ISSUE GROUP was established in April 2004. It is a forum established by both Kurdish and Norwegian women seeking to create awareness of women’s right in the ongoing fight for the human rights of the Kurdish people. The forum holds seminars and classes as well as participating in RKRs work.
RKR PROVIDES INFORMATION THROUGH VARIOUS CHANNELS:
The webpage seeks to provide the current news-updates from the Kurdish region. It also contains background information on the Kurdish region with religion, language -and historic outlines from Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Syria.
'Tema Kurdistan' was published for the first time in December 2005. The magazine had a particular focus on women’s struggle in the Kurdish areas. As an ethnic minority the Kurds has been oppressed and harassed, both politically and militarily. Women are especially endangered by violence and harassment in time of war and conflict, and subsequently many women live with the consequences of soldier’s crimes and fear of new assaults in Kurdistan today. ‘Tema Kurdistan: Kvinner’ focuses on some of the different aspect of being a woman in Kurdistan. Seminars are frequently held by the council in various topics concerning the Kurdish people and their struggle for human rights. Information about upcoming seminars will be provided in the calendar
Press-Releases is a tool used by RKR, as well as other organizations. Press-releases are sent to members of national authorities and media to bring attention to special issues of concern to the organization.
A newsletter is provided to our members by email 10-12 times a year. The letter contains the latest developments within Kurdish regions in Turkey, Iraq, Iran and Syria. In addition, the newsletter provides information about upcoming events, seminars, films and publications.
